Malta is renown for its numerous cultural heritage sites, monuments and museums spread across the island. Many date back as far as prehistory while others are more recent and date to the second world war period. Not only can visitors experience the fascination of the historical remembrances but one can also admire the myriad of unique architectural structures in various small villages as well as in the capital city, Valletta and the silent city of Mdina. Historical Places worth visiting are the Domus Romana (Roman Villa) which is located at Rabat. The Domus Romana is one of the oldest houses dating back to the Roman period, which also contains some of the finest Roman mosaics in the country. Besides the Roman Villa, one can also visit numerous museums such as the Inquisitor's Palace located right in the heart of the historical Three Cities: Cospicua, Senglea and Vittoriosa. Other historical attractions include the Palace Armoury in the Grandmasters' Palace in Valletta, the War museum, and Museum of Fine Arts all located in the Capital City Valletta. It is a splendid network of underground caves and chambers once used as a repository to the dead. Other temples and monuments worth visiting are Hagar Qim and Mnajdra. Both temples stand majestically on a hilltop surrounded by spectacular views of the sea and the Maltese countryside. Other Places of Interest The Upper Barrakka Gardens at Valletta offer spectacular views of the Grand Harbour and the three cities opposite. For a journey across time, the Malta Experience is certainly not an opportunity to be missed. Mdina, better known as the silent city is a small labyrinth of narrow passages and quiet alleys, which together with the intricate architectural designs of the buildings contribute to a mystical experience which is unique to the island.
